Khandeha, Mau block, Chitrakoot district. On the 29th of December, a 25-year old women set herself on fire, sucummbing to her injuries while being treated in hospital on the 30th.
According to a resident of the area Archana’s parent’s home is in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh, and she had been married to Rahul for two years. Her son’s birthday was on the 31st of December, and they were expecting guests at home that day. On the 29th, Archana was busy with preparations for the birthday, and had a disagreement with her husband. The argument had the family get involved, taunting her to set herself on fire and die. Archana had been tormented by these taunts often, and this time, at 3.30 in the afternoon, she poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire. When the guests in the house saw the smoke, they broke down Archana’s door and covered her in blankets to douse the fire. But by then she had already suffered 90 percent burns. She was taken to Jeevan Jyothi hospital in Allahabad, where she succumbed to her injuries at 8 am on the 30th.
Archana’s husband’s home was found locked on 30 December. Her sister-in-law and brother-in-law refused to comment on the matter.
The Sub-inspector at the Mau police station said that the matter was yet to be reported at the police station. Only if charges are pressed, action would be taken in the case.
