Riya, our peer in Banda, is undergoing a heart surgery in Kanpur
of 9, and grew up with uncles and aunts, and into an unlikely career as a reporter in Bundelkhand. In April last year, Riya had a heart attack and was told that she needed a valve replacement surgery. For the last few weeks she has been admitted into a charitable cardiac hospital in Kanpur, awaiting enough funds to complete her surgery, so she can get back to work and her younger brother can go and complete his BSc. Her aunts and uncles won’t take her calls anymore. Her local male colleagues have done nothing to help, and running around to the administration has elicited a contribution from the MP’s discretionary fund. At the end of the day, independent and ambitious young women need to fend for themselves? Or do they? Riya needs just over a lakh to be able to have her surgery.
