Kabrai, Mahoba district. Farmers who were promised compensation for their fertile land have got nothing in return. In 2010, the land of farmers in several villages in Mahoba district were taken away by the Irrigation Department for the Arjun Sahayak project, under which a dam was to be constructed in the area.
Farmers were promised four times the amount in return for their land. The Irrigation Department now claims that the amount marked for compensation has been spent for other activities; the promised amount will be given to the farmers when the next budget is approved.
Hari Singh and Janki Singh of Jaitpur village have lost 4-5 acres of land and have not been compensated. Vishwanath and Karan Singh of village Bagaul in Kabrai block also complain about losing their well irrigated and fertile land in return for nothing.
According to the executive engineer Harishchandra Yadav, the project requires 3000 hectares of land. We have acquired 1450 hectares; the remaining we will acquire gradully once the budget is sanctioned. We were offering Rs. 14-15 lakhs per hectare to farmers as compensation, but they are demanding an amount which is four times more than this.
