mahila mudda 1 (1)Chitrakoot. In an incident reminiscent of the Delhi gangrape in 2012, a 17-year old girl from neighbouring Satna district was raped by 2 men in a moving car in Karvi town. The incident that took place in the wee hours of 2 February, shocked residents of Karvi and put the local police under immense pressure. The accused were arrested the very next day and have been sent to Banda jail.

‘I was visiting my sister in Karvi and had reached the railway station at about 3 am. A government vehicle with a blue beacon pulled up and the 2 men in the car asked my brother-in-law and me to produce our identity cards,’ said the girl. Her brother-in-law said that he tried explaining to the 2 men who identified themselves as cops that they were regular travelers but the 2 men asked them to accompany them to the old Police Station some distance away. ‘At first we agreed to go with them because they were in a police vehicle and the Police Station is only a few hundred metres away from where we were detained but they insisted on taking us to the older Police Station,’ he informed the police.

On the way to the police station, the 2 men, identified as Krishna Kumar Yadav and Vijay Singh, threw the brother-in-law out of the car and took turns to rape the girl while the third man drove the car through Karvi town. They later dropped the girl off near Bhauri village in Manikpur where she sought help from the locals to call her sister’s family. They came to Bhauri and picked her up. They then took her to the police station to lodge a complaint.

The police were quick to put check points all across town. The culprits and were apprehended the very next day at one such check point. ‘The accused seemed quite nervous and were quick to confess. Vijay Singh is a contractor for the Railway Department in Banda and Krishna Kumar is a local from Manikpur. Using their connections, they picked up the Railway Police car from Manikpur and were misusing it that night. We have lodged an FIR against the 2 and they have been booked under Sections 376 D (gangrape) and 366 (kidnapping or abduction by misleading) of the IPC.
