Farewell, Riya

‘Journalism isn’t really a field for women, everyone would tell me. You should run a beauty parlour!’ Every woman journalist must have been given this advice at some point of their lives. Riya was among those who chose journalism as her profession, despite the unsolicited advice; making Banda in Bundelkhand her battle ground of sorts. For this, we laud her. Unattached to an organization, minus the support of her colleagues, Riya would work alone. As Khabar Lahariya journalists, her path often crossed ours; and as women journalists working in rural Bundelkhand, our life stories resonated as well. Being driven around for an official byte endlessly, not being invited onto media platforms because that was the domain of men. Also, the general perception men have of women journalists is that they only cover women’s issues.
Despite all the dissonance, Riya worked as a reporter, alone.
And Riya died alone too.
Riya underwent a heart surgery recently. During the medical process, there were very few who rallied around Riya, who helped her. Neither the media nor the officials expressed even an interest in supporting her. Suffering from post-op complications and a septicaemia setting in, Riya passed away on February 25.
It is unfortunate that her journey was cut short. We are deeply saddened knowing our paths will never cross again, that the women reporters’ count has gone down by one – already a miniscule proportion where we work. We are tearful at losing a friend. And yet hopeful that Riya’s brave journey inspires many a young woman.
